Whether you’re in school or you haven’t been to school in years, everyone is aware of the back-to-school season. School supplies placed in the seasonal aisles, back-to-school sales, and the summer to fall transitional time of the year.
Everyone has different feelings about this season but I have a fondness for it. It’s probably because I graduated high school almost a decade ago and the stress and anguish is no longer associated with back-to-school. Particularly, back-to-school fashion. As an elder Gen Z, I was watching girls my age doing clothing and beauty hauls. Many things have changed since then, so I will explore what teenagers are wearing today to analyze current trends and how teenagers are executing these trends in their everyday lives. Research for this piece is based on Internet browsing and talking to the teens in my life.
Was it casual?
Teens in the last few years have embraced casual clothing, opting for baggy jeans and sweat pants. High schoolers in 2024 were young children during the pandemic, which is a large contributor to the trend towards casual wardrobes. The idea is focus on comfort.
Athleisure
If there’s one thing that’s lasted the test of time it’s athleisure. It began its reign in the late 2010s and has still been going strong, post-pandemic. There are now different styles under athleisure whether you’re a Pilates princess or you just like wearing oversized soccer jerseys. According to fashiondive.com, the top brands for teen girls in fall 2023 was Nike, American Eagle, and Lululemon. More recent trends include track sets, jerseys, and running shoes.
Perms are back?
Allegedly, perms, specifically for teenage boys, are back. Think of a fade on the sides, .long and curly on top. Whether you have this texture naturally or you need cosmetic assistance, many call this style a “broccoli cut”. It’s what the Bieber cut was in 2013.
Basics galore
Teens are gravitating towards solid colors and wardrobe basics. Think plain shirts, tank top, with matching tennis skirts. These trends get paired with dainty, basic jewelry. Beware the Amazon basic “must-have” videos!
Take Aways
I think teenagers style in 2024 is reflective of what young adults are wearing now. The clean girl was a popular Austin’s aesthetic that I can still see in trends with teens today. Also this does not take into account the kids who have alternative/sub culture styles. The trends I discussed were from mainstream trends, popular with upper middle class American teens.
