GET TO KNOW: Style Cramps

By: Jewel Fiorillo

A profile styled interview done about local band- Style Cramps.

Style Cramps is a dynamic band made up of Aaron as the lead vocalist and social media manager, Caleb on lead guitar and vocals, Matt on keyboards and backup vocals, Nicc on bass, and Houston on drums. Aaron, married to Caleb's sister, Reyna, collaborated with Caleb on music, leading to the creation of their first song, "Can't Stand You." This collaboration sparked the formation of Style Cramps, with Nicc and Houston, both friends with prior band experience, joining soon after. Matt, a skateboarder and filmmaker, was added when Aaron discovered his piano skills, completing the band's lineup.

The band's name, Style Cramps, is a nod to their previous rap project, Gear Crisis, reflecting their genre-fluid approach to music. Their sound, influenced by New Order, Nirvana, The Cure, Blink-182, and Ramones, started with a dark, synth-wave vibe but evolved into a heavier, punk-inspired style. The band members' diverse influences contribute to their unique sound, making each song distinct. Despite these varied influences, their debut album will be heavily punk-inspired, although future projects may explore different genres.

Their journey has been marked by notable achievements, including playing over 12 shows in their first year and crowd surfing during performances. The Las Vegas music scene has significantly influenced their development, with local venues like Berlin Bar serving as their home base. Highlights of their music career include performing at a skate video premiere in Reno and a New Year’s Eve show in Arizona. These experiences have not only helped them grow as musicians but also strengthened their bond as friends.

Despite the challenges, such as the intense Las Vegas heat, the band remains committed to their craft, balancing individual creativity with collective vision. They navigate the business side with the help of a manager and engage fans through social media, despite their preference for a grassroots approach. Looking ahead, Style Cramps aims to continue making music, performing, and possibly touring while maintaining their strong friendships and creative inspiration. Their advice to aspiring musicians is to find the right group of people and enjoy the process of creating music together, ensuring that fun remains at the heart of their journey.
