Fall is here even if the desert doesn’t let us feel like it. If you look at the fall trends right now, what’s trending feels like deja vu. Suede, dark red colors, long boots. Its the been the same cyclic trends every year for the past few years, will sprinklings of viral items that quickly lose popularity.
Why?
The reason why I feel like this has been the case for many seasons is because of a few reasons.
Faster Trend Cycles
Trend cycles have moved so much faster in the last decade. The 20 year trend cycle has quickly moved into a 5 year trend cycle. Trends are moving in and out of style so quickly, it’s hard to keep track of what’s still in style. Social media has fostered a culture of overconsumption to a point wear
Online Niche
Algorithms have made it things custom catered to our desires. Content that plays over and over, affecting your perception of reality even something as unserious as trends. What’s trending in one subculture will not reflect what’s trending in another. For example, someone who only wears street wear and athleisure will not be following the same trends as someone who follows mainstream luxury runway shows.
No One Cares
I might just be getting older, but I feel like people don’t care as much about clothing trends. People don’t scoff at wearing clothes that were “last year”. People are too exhausted and overworked to really care.
At the end of the day, you can use trends to navigate your personal style journey. Fall is a great season to layer and experiment. Or stick with what is comfortable for you.
