Are you millennial or older Gen Z? Do you remember the tight discomfort of brightly colored or acid wash skinny jeans? Congratulations, you probably saw the downfall of Vine and TikTok in real time.
What you’ve also seen is the neck-breaking speed of the accelerating trend cycle. You can see how quickly trends come and go just looking at jeans in the last 40 years.
The 1980s were defined by high waisted, tight acid wash and brightly colored jeans. The 1990s reversed this trend towards baggy jeans. The early 2000s made a large shift towards low waisted jeans (wax required low waisted jeans). But, as we approach current trends, jeans have gone through many phases.
Early 2010s saw a 1980s revival with skinny jeans in bright colors and new styles of acid wash denim. The mid-2010s introduced the mom jeans silhouette, high waisted, loose on the hips, and tapered at the ankle. Finally, the end of the 2010s and into the 2020s has the baggy jeans.
Although baggy jeans has been popular for about five years, it feels like skinny jeans is bound to make a comeback, swinging the pendulum back.
Will I be wearing skinny jeans? Maybe. I am not immune to the power of influencing. I try to stick to styles that I feel comfortable in, so the past few years has seen me in classic straight leg and baggy styles. But if skinny jeans of the future are cute, good quality, and don’t cut off blood circulation in my legs, I will probably wear them.
