New York City has Timberland boots and big black puffer jackets. Silicon Valley has Patagonia Vests. Las Vegas has… what?
When researching what Las Vegas fashion looks like, the results are mostly outfits catered to tourists exploring the glitzy Las Vegas Strip. Sparkles and silky dinner dresses galore. But I wanted to know what the Vegas Locals wear in their everyday life. What does a Vegas Local wear?
I have lived in the Vegas Valley for all of my adult life. I moved here at 18 years old and I have never looked back. After living here for 8 years, I have some observations of my own. Vegas (unfortunately) is heavily influenced by Calirfornia because of the large influx of California natives moving to the city and its proximity. Like Californians, many Vegas suburbanites dress very casually for most occasions, athleisure being a popular choice for running daily errands. However, the definition of “casual” may vary.
Like every other city, the Valley is not a monolith. This small city and its style can vary by region and by social class. In the Summerlin area, its upper middle class citizens frequent Lululemon at the Downtown Summerlin mall. Though expensive, it represents the casual, laid back style among Las Vegas citizens. In the Anthem neighborhood in Henderson, the older, retired population enjoys their version of casual with cargo shorts and polo shirts on men and soft blouses with khakis on women.
Style can also differ by communities not defined by geographic location. The local rock music scene has its own unique look. From the local shows I’ve been to, black is the most popular color with lots of thrifted pieces, metal embellishments, and baggy/loose jeans. Many show-goers can be seen in their favorite local band’s merch tees. This style is more experimental and diverse than the casual, everyday look seen at the local mall or restaurant.
Las Vegas is rapidly growing, so I feel like its style identity is still forming. Las Vegas may not be New York or LA, but what I really love about living here is that it’s very open. Anything goes here, so you can wear sweatpants and a t-shirt but you can also wear a bedazzled, fringe dress or neon rave attire and no one bats an eye.
One thing that can be sure, the one staple of a Vegas Local’s wardrobe is definitely a t-shirt from their neighborhood casino.
