You Can’t Buy Personal Style

Written by Tiffany Jamero

There’s been a lot of content out there saying that 2025 is the year of no-buys, low-buys, and project pans, meaning people are trying to save more money in the new year.

I also want to save money and part of that is lowering my clothing consumption. I spent so much money on clothes, shoes, and bags in 2024 and it made me realize that I can’t buy personal style. It got to a point where I would buy something on a whim and I would forget about it. Once I started hiding packages and feeling numb when I swipe my card at the store, I knew it was time for a change.

I know what I like style-wise and it’s time to actually wear and use these items rather than forget about them to buy something new. Here are my personal goals to lowering my fashion related consumption and comment below about some of your own goals:

  • Only one new item per month - If I want an item, whether it’s clothing, shoes, or a purse, I can only add one item to my wardrobe. I have such a large closet, I could go the whole year without buying a single new piece, but cutting cold turkey is hard. However, if I don’t have any pieces I want to buy, I don’t need to buy an item for the month if I don’t want to.

  • Dressing up/making an outfit everyday. If you have heard of the #75stylehardchallenge, coined by @oldloserinbrooklyn, it’s basically that idea. Create an outfit everyday without adding anything new to your wardrobe. I want to do this but everyday for the year. Personal style is a creative muscle you work on everyday. I’m hoping to improve my personal style by actually using what I have

  • Allowance for mending - when I have the available spending, I will have my clothes mended. I have many skirts and pants that  I would like to get hemmed and shoes that I love that need to be repaired.

  • Only buying things I really want - no more buying things because they’re on sale or because it might get sold out. If I want a secondhand piece really badly and it was meant for me, it will stay on my TheRealReal saves when I’m ready. If it gets sold, it wasn’t meant for me. Additionally, making sure whatever it is goes with the rest of my wardrobe. If I can’t incorporate it into what I already wear, I’m not gonna wear it.
