I watched a TikTok video by the creator Rian Phin (@thatadult) about what makes fashion art. And what makes fashion good art.
Essentially, she says knowing about fashion doesn’t necessarily make you fashionable.
It makes me think of the image of the “micro-trend final boss”. The image of someone who consumes clothing and doesn’t seem to have personal style. This person follows fashion blogs, watches runway shows, and probably has a vast knowledge of fashion. However, what this individual might lack, according to Phin, is life experiences outside of fashion.
Fashion is more than designers, pattern making, and trend forecasting. It’s about the life lived in your clothes. What makes someone fashionable is how they wear their clothes, not about how their clothes wear them.
I love fashion so much. I love putting cute outfits together and presenting my personal style to the world. That can be hard to do everyday when your job (where we spend most of our waking hours) doesn’t allow you to dress exactly how you want to, there may be a strict dress code or uniform you have to wear. It’s something I’ve been struggling with for a long time. Life can get in the way of how you want to express yourself creatively. Watching this video reminded me that I don’t need to create a Pinterest perfect outfit everyday to be considered stylish or fashionable. My life experiences enrich my creativity and it makes the clothes I wear everyday mean something. And understanding the context of art within society and culture can be more meaningful than spitting out facts about New York Fashion Week in ‘98.
